Ways to quit smoking

Smoking can have some serious effects in a person’s health. Cancers and heart attacks are the main things that result from smoking. Also, because of smoking you do not only harm yourself but other loved ones around you who are passively inhaling the smoke. Quitting smoking can be really hard once you start the habit. There are many people out there who want to get rid of this habit but just cannot stop it. Here are certain ways to help you.

• The first  thing is to have trust in you. Avoid negative thoughts like “it is very difficult to quit smoking”. Believe in yourself and you will be able to do it. First write down some reasons  why you want to quit smoking read it every night before you go to bed. Finally set a date to start quitting smoking. Do not let anything change this date.

• Next you have to understand the fact that you cannot quit smoking in a day especially if you are an addict. Have some realistic expectations. Try to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke rather than giving it all up in a day or so.

• First few days may be the hardest. But do not lose hope. Deep breathing is one of the most effective measures. Every time you want a smoke takes a deep breath and then slowly exhale. This reduces stress which is one of the most important causes of smoking.

• Take in a lot of fluids like water to wash away nicotine and other poisons from your body. But remember to stay away from alcohol, sugar and coffee.

• Just get some help from someone in your family or friends. Tell them you are expecting quitting and ask them to help you. This can make a great difference. You can also have a bet with someone that you would leave smoking on a certain target date. This can also be of great help.

Switch to a different brand that you find distasteful but make sure you switch to a brand that has low nicotine content or better take an verbal substitute. Many smokers have stopped smoking by taking substitutes.

Change your routine by going for a walk or jogging or even going to the gym. This would take your mind of smoking. You can also relax yourself by having a massage or taking up yoga classes.

Do not pretend as if you hate smoking. This would be useless. Rather tell yourself that you would reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke. Also get rid of clothes that smell of cigarettes as they can linger around for a long time.

• On the day you quit get rid of all your cigarettes, your lighters and ashtrays. Then develop a clean and fresh environment around you

Holding out is the most important thing. After you quit certain events may make you want to smoke again. If so do the first step mentioned above. Remember all the above steps can help you only when you believe that you can quit smoking.
